ZAKARIADZE<\/p>\n<p>During the Palaeozoic\u2013Early Cenozoic, Georgia and adjacent areas represented part of the Tethys ocean and its northern\u00a0 margin. At the\u00a0 pre-collisional stage, systems of island-arc and back-arc structures can be distinguished along the southern margin\u00a0 of the\u00a0 East European continent and the oceanic basin. Several events\u00a0 of supra-subduction magmatic activity and obduction of oceanic crust fragments took place during the Palaeozoic, Mesozoic\u00a0 and\u00a0 Early Cenozoic.<\/p>\n<p>New results obtained\u00a0 through the International Research\u00a0 Group and\u00a0 DARIUS\u00a0 projects can be used\u00a0 to build a base for\u00a0 more\u00a0 precise tectonic zoning\u00a0 of the southern Caucasus\u00a0 and adjacent areas, the correlation of these zones and better substantiated Mesozoic\u2013Early Cenozoic palaeotectonic reconstructions of the\u00a0 region.\u00a0 The final closure\u00a0 of the oceanic and back-arc basins and the formation of the\u00a0 present\u00a0 day structure of Georgia\u00a0 and adjacent\u00a0 countries occurred in the Late Cenozoic. The collision between the Africa\u2013Arabian and Eurasian plates caused inversion of the\u00a0 relief and,\u00a0 in place of the intra-arc and back-arc basins, the mountain fold\u2013thrust belts of the Great and\u00a0 Lesser Caucasus were formed with the Transcaucasian\u00a0 intermontane depression between them. The marine basins of Georgia\u00a0 were\u00a0 replaced by euxinic basins and, later, by con- tinental basins\u00a0 with\u00a0 subaerial sedimentation and volcanism.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3658\" src=\"https:\/\/geologicalservice.ge\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/Screenshot-2021-06-24-at-16.57.02-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1110\" height=\"460\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Authors: A.
